Plant-Based Weight Loss For Women

It hit me at 5 pm on a train on my way home from a holiday in 2014. I settled into my seat to read an article on climate change. As I read, I began to think about healthy choices. My daughter, my house, my life. It occurred to me that it’s all quite small in the scope of things.
The big picture of a planet floating through space with the miracle of life consumed me. The lack of health and wellness on Earth brought tears to my eyes. As I thought about the state of humanity and climate change something inside me awoke. I felt like the character Neo, in the movie The Matrix. I stood staring at the metaphorical red pill and there was no turning back.
Maybe it was health and wellness priorities settling in as I returned to the realities of my daily life. Maybe I had taken enough time off to see a bigger climate change and health picture. But it hit me. The planet, my health, the animals… HOW could I continue down my current path?
This is my story of how climate change led me to self-awareness, self-care, and ultimately healthy choices with a whole-food plant-based diet.
As I thought about my daughter and her future – health and wellness became the spotlight. I was struck cold by fear of climate change. Arctic ice rapidly melting. Wildfires growing. Migration happening.
What about the next generations?
The Earth has been taken for granted. I felt as if I were mourning the loss of a loved one, but it was much greater than that, I had truly taken it all for granted. I couldn’t find my breath.
Species are headed toward extinction. The impoverished are left to suffer from destructive weather. And factory farming continues to send animals to mass graves for our pleasure.
It all hit me. Climate change and health are connected on every level. Healthy choices are everything in life.
I returned home late and ready for rest but when I awoke, the storm within me kept brewing. Looking back at it now, it was the beginning of a mindset change. After living the status quo, I began to let go of my ideas of instant pleasure being the only means to happiness. Retail therapy, overconsumption, easy fast food, and our wants for instant gratification have let us down.
It was a dark era in my life. The world had disillusioned me and my self-pleasing ways were not serving me. I had to accept it. Popular culture had conditioned me to attain worldly success. But worldly success doesn’t value what I hold sacred. I was far away from health and wellness.
It hit me. I was connected to my ideas more than my heart. I was on the same destructive path that consumes the Earth's resources and exploits them. There is a connection between climate change and health.
And I was heartbroken. The reality became clear – I needed to create a lifestyle with healthy choices. Others' ideas or traditions could not define me. Honouring the traditions of my family and ancestors in a way that made sense to me overwhelmed me.
But how?
How do I align my vegan health and wellness values with my family traditions? For some, meat-filled family recipes during holidays are not easily forgotten. Examining my feelings about vegan values became important to me.
Before I could face the fear of creating my lifestyle through healthy choices, I had to dare to hope for better. This was a scary turning point in my life. The fear was crippling and my time was anxiety filled.
My mindset shifted to mindful self-compassion as I began to reflect on my goals.
Through this all, I had to show up for my family. I had to carry them, but I needed to be supported too. I needed more self-care. As women, we often hold the torch of home maintenance and emotional nurturing.
Does Mother Earth feel the same way about climate change?
I became a mother at thirty-eight. Showing up to make our children and family feel cared for with connection is where we shine as women. Having an active role with my daughter is important to me. The idea of not being with her or too unfit to help her in my older age is unbearable.
Healthier choices are a priority of mine. I knew I wasn’t meeting my expectations.
I needed a mindset that afforded me nurturing support and connection.
This is where my partner Paul comes in. Paul has embraced a vegan lifestyle for 35 years. As I found the time to meet my self-care needs through reflection and healthy choices, Paul turned out to be my greatest encourager. He was my guide through this storm.
With my newfound self-awareness, Paul was by my side helping me make time for self-care. I began to make progress on my path to health and wellness.
I felt stuck with low energy. Monday through Thursday dragged. I only felt energetic when the weekend arrived. I was eating what I thought was a healthy diet and exercising, but this struggle left me feeling like maybe something was wrong with me. My hope for health and wellness started to dwindle.
My self-confidence was low. I struggled to see if I could make a change for myself, let alone help others. I felt beaten down by the world. I couldn’t find my passion and worse I was losing hope in my ability to have passion. My first healthy choice was to choose to believe in myself.
I felt buried alive in work. I needed another me to get all the work done during the day. I was past the point of overwhelm and fully depleted. I didn’t know how to address this struggle. Getting help to take some weight off my shoulders seemed nearly impossible. I didn’t understand how to make health and wellness choices.
I was haunted by loss. Watching people special to me be taken away too early was saddening. I had to find a path to healthy choices. As a health and wellness advocate, I believe in standing up and taking action when necessary. I couldn't let myself suffer the same fate as my mother-in-law, who died too young from poor health and poor food choices.
I was lacking freedom. Health and wellness provide flexibility. I longed to have a healthy vegan lifestyle. It was missing. I kept wishing until it occurred to me: It’s time to live in action with my healthy choices.
The connection between climate change and health strengthened me. As I began to recognise my role in my health and wellness, I became more aware of my role in helping the planet heal.
I longed for a holistic mindset to feel connected to the Earth.
With Paul by me & my daughter’s side, I let go of my past ideas. I leaned on him and held onto my faith to give me the strength to make healthy choices.
Letting go and healing allowed me to step into my health and wellness. I learned to change my perspective. I dug deeper to transform my mindset and align my actions with my heart.
I mourned the ideas of my youth. I refined less informed ideas on wealth and happiness. Updates included deeper holistic ideas rooted in nature. I realised my past dreams weren’t my dreams. I reset my mindset to connect with myself and found myself spiritually engaged and purpose-driven.
Healthy choices began to present themselves and my energy came streaming back in. My one and only daughter, the absolute gem in my life, became my motivation. The legacy I leave my daughter became my priority for every choice.
My why helped shape my purpose-driven mindset.
At first, my choices with food left me in an exhausting and draining endless downward spiral. Every weekend I sabotaged my weekly efforts towards health and wellness. My food splurge was disguised as a well-deserved treat.
Wine, takeout, and junk food would start on Thursdays. I would eat more and more as I began socialising through the weekend. I would end Sunday by spending endless hours of self-care recovery time on my couch.
The endless cycle of eating more snacks because I was craving more energy. More sugar and more processed food. These were my poisons of choice. Eating in denial to feel better so I could bounce back into the work week. Then the guilt would kick in
How could I stop what I didn’t understand?
I struggled with my weight. I would get to an uncomfortable size and my clothes wouldn’t fit. Feeling terrible, and not being able to find anything to wear, I would then go on some mad diet to lose weight.
It was a cycle on repeat I wasn't even aware of.
There was a bigger picture needing my attention. It had to do with my relationship with myself. Connecting to myself and honouring my healthy choices helps me stand tall and strong. Freedom became an important motivator in my mindset.
After my heavy emotional storm cleared, I realised I had nothing to fear. At first, a sliver of light cracked through my consciousness. I had gained some wisdom. Then it became a guiding light to more healthy choices.
I wasn’t aware of it, but I had let fear create a vicious cycle in my life. I didn’t know I could make a difference. It had never occurred to me that fear was an underlying motivation.
Reflecting brought me to realise there was room for change. I began a self-awareness process of letting my ideas go one by one. This process has helped me hold onto what is truly sacred.
I’ve learned to see fear as a guide. When I feel fear, I embrace it. Fear of being labelled vegan once plagued me. But as I aligned my values with my heart's desire I learned there’s no reason to live a vegan lifestyle in the shadows.
The negative voices and the nay-sayers began to lose their power as I stepped into mine.
Allowing myself to say no was one of the most important healthy choices I could make. I didn’t understand the importance of boundaries.
Saying no is powerful. I had to be gentle and patient with myself to allow a mindset of health and wellness. Mindful self-compassion led me to my most noteworthy healthy choice – letting go of my feelings of inadequacy.
After years of struggling to allow myself freedom, I changed the dialogue. I realised there’s no need to apologise for being true to myself. I began to say no and hold important boundaries using this value-based mindset.
Every time I said no, I gained the space I needed to grow.
Embracing healthy choices with an open heart has left me feeling unstoppable. Through creative problem-solving with healthy choices, I’ve aligned my heart and mind. All of my healthy choices are based on my core values of love and care.
I’ve earned my self-respect. I trust myself to make decisions to fuel my soul. Now is the time to live in my power and stand for the things I love.
I feel more connected to my family’s matriarchs now. Even though I’ve left some of their traditions with cooking and living, I've created new ideas in their honour. I’m happy to say I’ve stopped believing that you need violence to attain food. I also feel good about the cruelty-free personal products I use and wear.
I’ve found my way to make innovative changes to benefit future generations. Healthy choices leave me without regrets or denial. I’m clear on my goals. I’m free, truly free and I live with self-confidence and mindful self-compassion.
I no longer subscribe to the mainstream ideals and beliefs that once made me take a back seat in my life. Healthy Choices with a vegan diet have led me to my life’s purpose.
Being purpose-driven is the mindset shift that has made the difference in my life.
I longed to make a difference as a health and wellness coach. The COVID-19 pandemic gave me a lot of time to reflect and grow. Self-compassion transformed my mindset and I couldn’t ignore the calling to share it with others.
